"πρὸς τὸν θεόν" is a photo book that is currently in pre-production. It consists of a cycle of analogue photographs that I have created over the span of the last 6 years. For the creation of this project I’ve developed an approach reminiscent of meditation, centering on unguided artistic expression — a process akin to observing one’s thoughts. Unlike intentional searches for motifs that rely on consciousness, my photography unfolds in a state of self-forgetfulness. Similar to the realization that the “self” exists only because of thought and not vice versa, this approach challenges the significance of authors. It illuminates the relationship between art and artists, asserting that just as thinking creates the self, art creates the artist. I traverse aimlessly, slowly, thoughtlessly, and unconsciously, yielding to whims as my gaze captures images through the lens. To further highten the focus on the moment and the openness, I choose to work with analogue photography as a medium as well as restricting myself to one picture per motiv. Whether it’s one image in six months or 36 in an hour, each photograph is guided by a feeling of connectedness to the place where it happens. I like to think of it, more like an exchange, a sort of communication, rather than me taking something (as in taking a picture), the environment “speaks” to me and the image is created with my help as a collaborator. Describing this sensation I experience in that moment is akin to the state experienced when gazing out of a train window, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy. It mirrors my artistic journey—a fluid exploration where the act of creation parallels the dreamlike consciousness during a train journey that puts you in a trance like state, where reality and imagination converge.
